How Hiriya was Transformed from a Dump and Environmental Hazard into a Flourishing Recycling Park
In the Beginning there was a Dump
The Hiriya mountain rose over a period of 46 years, between 1952 and 1998, peaking at 60 meters above its surroundings, 80 meters above sea level.
This is in fact a man-made mountain of rubbish that sprang up from its flat surroundings. Experts estimate its volume at about 16 million cubic meters of garbage.
The garbage disposal methods practiced in Israel in the past created several environmental nuisances for the country in general and for the inhabitants of the nearby towns in particular.
